چکیده

We have proposed an analysis of regional CO2 budgets of North America, using coupled models of terrestrial ecophysiology and biogeochemistry and the physical climate system. The models are driven by observed climates and by the time-varying observed state of the vegetated land surface as derived from satellite imagery. The coupled system has been developed to predict atmospheric trace gas composition (CO2, δC, and CO), which can be compared directly to measurements made at remote observing stations, tall towers, and by aircraft during the study period. Input data include retrospective satellite vegetation imagery at 8 km for the period 1981-1999 and analyzed weather data. Methods have been tested at the WLEF tall tower site, which can also be applied at the ARM-CART Southern Great Plains site in Oklahoma, both sites having abundant atmospheric data. Model output was used to test observing strategies and prioritize data collection, as well as to estimate the carbon balance of subcontinental regions.

Regional and Global Estimation of Terrestrial CO2 Exchange from NIGEC Flux Data

of Proposed Work: We will perform a scaling analysis of terrestrial carbon exchange using several of the NIGEC flux sites in different biomes (forest, C 4 grassland, C 3 agriculture), using a numerical model of the biophysics and biogeochemistry of plants and soils (SiB2), which includes calculations of the surface fluxes of CO 2 , energy, and moisture. This model will be used to analyze local ...

Final Report : Investigation Group : CD - 01 PIs

We have completed a multi-year study of ecosystem carbon fluxes across Amazônia using the Simple Biosphere model (SiB2) at several spatial and temporal scales. We have developed understanding and confidence in the model simulations at local scales by direct evaluation against data collected in the field, and extrapolated to regional, Basin, and even global scales by coupling our local ecophysio...

Spring hydrology determines summer net carbon uptake in northern ecosystems

Increased photosynthetic activity and enhanced seasonal CO2 exchange of northern ecosystems have been observed from a variety of sources including satellite vegetation indices (such as the normalized difference vegetation index; NDVI) and atmospheric CO2 measurements. Most of these changes have been attributed to strong warming trends in the northern high latitudes (⩾50°N). Here we analyze the ...

Biosphere model simulations of interannual variability in terrestrial 13 C / 12 C exchange

[1] Previous studies suggest that a large part of the variability in the atmospheric ratio of 13CO2/12CO2 originates from carbon exchange with the terrestrial biosphere rather than with the oceans. Since this variability is used to quantitatively partition the total carbon sink, we here investigate the contribution of interannual variability (IAV) in biospheric exchange to the observed atmosphe...

Seasonal cycle of COO, COO, and COO in the middle atmosphere: Implications for mesospheric dynamics and biogeochemical sources and sinks of CO2

[1] The isotopic anomaly of oxygen in atmospheric CO2 is caused by exchange reactions with isotopically anomalous O(D) in the middle atmosphere. In the stratosphere, the major source of O(D) is O3 photolysis; O3 is known to possess mass-independent isotopic composition, with dO3 dO3 100% relative to atmospheric O2. Higher in the mesosphere, Lyman a-driven photodissociation of O2 provides a more...
